“I think we should be proud of it [the record],” Ferguson said. “It’s not easy away from home in Europe. We’ve been to some fantastic places over the years. “We showed maturity. There is a way of playing away in Europe, you saw it tonight.”
The win also marked Ferguson’s first victory over Russian opposition in Russia. He felt his side deserved the win after a professional performance. “We showed good pace in our game, kept good possession. I think that was a key factor.” The victory places United on nine points in Group B after three games, leaving the Reds within touching distance of the second round. The boss also felt his side scored a tactical victory, which was ideal preparation for Sunday's vital league clash with Liverpool. "We wanted a bit more of a surge through the middle rather than the wide positions. I felt that if we could get into those areas then the wide players could come into it at a later stage. I think it worked out quite well. "We had some good chances in the second half and we’re pleased that Valencia has got an important goal for us."
Ferguson was also quick to reassure any concerns over the fitness of Ferdinand and Scholes, who were substituted in the second half. He said it was purely a precaution to make sure they were well rested for Sunday.
