Former Manchester United striker Andrew Cole has backed Wayne Rooney to score "25-30 goals" this season.

Cole, himself having scored 121 goals in 275 appearances for United, felt that Rooney was keen to step up in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and prove his class. "Rooney has started the season really well. He's ready to step into Ronaldo's shoes. His attitude is 'I'm top, and I'm going to prove it'. He's the man to get 25-30 goals this season," Cole said, according to United’s official website.

The ex-England ace also urged fans to be patient with Dimitar Berbatov, after the Bulgarian endured a mixed first season. Cole acknowledged that the high expectations that greeted Berbatov have yet to be met, but emphasised the importance of the stylish forward’s contributions.

"It's not easy coming to United in your first season," he added. "The spotlight is on you straight away and everyone expected Berbatov to get 30 goals last year.
"I don't think he's that type of player, but he brings something different to the team. He's so elegant.”

Cole was also looking forward to seeing new signing Michael Owen make an impact.
He continued: “Then there's Michael Owen. There aren't many natural finishers around. Sir Alex told me that if he keeps Owen fit he'll get goals."

Rio Ferdinand will start England's final World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, following a message of support from national coach Fabio Capello.

Many pundits found fault with the United defender when goalkeeper Robert Green was sent off in Saturday’s shock 1-0 defeat to Ukraine. However, Capello will ignore the critics and retain Rio in his back four to face Belarus at Wembley.

“Rio will play," Capello confirmed.

"I have big confidence in Rio. I'm sure he will get better with every game. I spoke with Rio and I will speak also with some other players. We will watch the DVD of the Ukraine game to understand what happened and I will see the mistakes."

Wes Brown, Ben Foster and Michael Carrick are Rio’s fellow Reds in a squad depleted by Wayne Rooney’s withdrawal. “Rooney is a very important player for us. For this reason we will play a different style against Belarus, with some different players,” said Capello, whose team have already qualified for South Africa 2010. Other United players in action on Wednesday night include Nani and Antonio Valencia, both of whom are still chasing a place in the World Cup finals.

Nani’s Portugal are expected to reach the European play-offs, having manoeuvred into second place in their qualifying group with only Malta left to play at home. Valencia’s Ecuador have slipped down the solitary South American group, from which the top four qualify automatically. Fifth place and a play-off against a team from North, Central America and Caribbean now seems the most realistic route – to get that, the Ecuadorians will need to win in Chile while Uruguay fail to beat Argentina in Montevideo.

Old Trafford is an all-seater football stadium in the Trafford borough of Greater Manchester, England, and is the home of Premier League club Manchester United. With space for 76,212 spectators, Old Trafford has the second-largest capacity of any English football stadium after Wembley Stadium, the third-largest of any stadium in the United Kingdom, and the eleventh-largest in Europe. It is one of two stadia in the country to have been given a five-star rating by UEFA. The stadium is approximately 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from Old Trafford Cricket Ground and the adjacent Manchester Metrolink tram station.

The ground, given the nickname the Theatre of Dreams by Bobby Charlton, has been United's permanent residence since 1910, with the exception of an eight-year absence from 1941 to 1949, following the bombing of the stadium in the Second World War. During this period, the club shared Maine Road with local rivals, Manchester City. The ground underwent several expansions in the 1990s and 2000s, most notably the addition of extra tiers to the North, West and East stands which served to return the ground almost to its original capacity of 80,000. Future expansion is likely to involve the addition of a second tier to the South Stand, which would raise the capacity to over 90,000. The stadium's current record attendance was recorded in 1939, when 76,962 spectators watched the FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town.

The ground has frequently hosted FA Cup semi-final matches as a neutral venue and several England international fixtures while the new Wembley Stadium was under construction. It also hosted matches at the 1966 FIFA World Cup and Euro 96 and the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final. Aside from football-related uses, Old Trafford has hosted Super League's Grand Final since the rugby league's adoption of playoffs in 1998 and the final of the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.
